“I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up!”
Have you ever fallen into temptation and in your heart you believed that there was absolutely no way you would be able to bounce back? As Christians how in the world do we get past our constant struggle with sin?
In this article, I really just want to get straight to the point. There are some points I want to share with you that will hopefully help you get pass your past sins so that you can start living a righteousness life grounded in Christ that reflects liberty from the power of sin.
1. Understand that you were/are forgiven
The Bible says, “God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from ALL unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9). As Christians we need to accept that God is a faithful God and that He is a forgiving God. Although it’s hard to believe that God is so forgiving when we constantly nail Him to The Cross, it’s a reality that we must accept and receive with thanksgiving. Christ was the “propitiation for our sins…” (1 John 2:2). Christ was and is the atonement for all of your sins, past, present, and future. Receive it and accept it.
2. Understand that sin has no dominion over grace - which abounds
2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “And He said to me My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness. Most gladly therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ will dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” In Romans 5:20 Paul also says, “The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased grace increased all the more.” Grace continues to increase daily not only because Christ died for our sins but because everyday we’re given a new chance to repent, confess, and turn from sin.
3. You will forever be a new creature in Christ
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corin. 5:17) Your old self died with Christ and now you are no longer a slave to sin. So being a new creature in Christ isn’t about following a long list of can’t-do’s, it’s about accepting who you were always called to be in Christ. Contrary to popular belief, the old man was never you. The new creature that you are today is who God intended for you to be, it’s who you really are - it’s just now you’ve come into the knowledge of Christ and understand that this is who you were supposed to be all along. Isn’t it silly to be or act like something you’re not?! This is exactly why Paul encourages us through His letter to the Romans:
6.) For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—7.) because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
8.) Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9.) For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10.) The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
11.) In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12.) Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13.) Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. 14.) For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.
Be who you truly are! Which is the you who is founded and grounded in Christ Jesus.
4. Understand that your mind has to be renewed in these things
If I’m constantly condemning myself every time I fall - chances are I’m not reading what the word of God says about me. Which is why it’s so important for us to refer to the scriptures which convict us of sin, lead us to repent, receive forgiveness and godly encouragement. Renewal can only come about through consistently reading the word of God (Romans 12:1-2) because the word of God tells us what God says about us and how we can live a righteous life that is also resilient.
Today is a new day, and old things passed away 2,000 years ago with the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
